Hera Van Sande
Hera is a civil engineer-architect. Since her studies, she has led her own firm, JUNO architects. Her research into Japanese modernism resulted in a doctorate, and today she is active as a lecturer at VUB and KU Leuven. In addition, she is involved in various architectural initiatives.
Hera graduated in 1991 as a civil engineer architect from Ghent University and taught there after her studies from 1993 to 2001. Since 1993, she has worked as an independent architect with her firm JUNO architects.
As part of her doctoral research on Japanese modernism, she traveled through Japan and was a researcher at Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo. In 2008, she obtained the degree of doctor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with her research Kunio Maekawa. A Japanese Modernist in search for architectural identity.
Hera collaborated with Japanese architect Toyo Ito on the pavilion at the Burg in Bruges in 2004 and on the competition for library De Krook in Ghent in 2010.
At present, Hera teaches in the master's program in architectural engineering sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the master's program in architecture at KU Leuven.
In addition to her work as artistic director of Archipel, she is also a recurring contributor to the architecture magazine A+U from Tokyo and is a member of the artistic committee of the Belgian magazine A+.
