Dykes, dams, locks, pumping stations, weirs. Located at the junction of the IJ, the North Sea Canal and the Amstel estuary, Amsterdam has a long history of water management. City, landscape and infrastructure come together in a city characterised by some 75 kilometres of canals and more than 1,200 bridges. Water and the city are inextricably linked, and whoever says water thinks of… kayaking!
We discover the city while floating and paddling. For three days, we navigate the canal, the IJ and the many canals through the capital of our dear northern neighbours. The focus is on architecture that is in direct dialogue with the water. Thus, we sail under the extraordinary Entrepot-west bridge building by Dutch architects Atelier PRO. We visit the urban greenhouses by Zwarts & Jansma, the modernist bridge keeper’s house by Dirk Sterenberg that has been transformed into a unique hotel room. In the West of Amsterdam, we go up the IJ and visit the fascinating NDSM island, the Kraanspoor and the EYE museum. Finally, we make our way to the East where we discover, among other things, the floating homes of Schoonschip.
