Oaxaca de JuárezMX
The nickname la Verde Antequera comes from the former name of the state capital of Oaxaca, Nueva Antequera, and the range of structures built in the local green natural stone. Together with the nearby Monte Albán archaeological site, the colonial town centre is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The whole place is set in spectacular mountain scenery, at the meeting between the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, the continuation of Mexico’s volcanic belt. Just strolling through Oaxaca de Juárez, soaking up its scents and absorbing its life, is an experience in itself.
After staying in Mexico City, this birthplace of such prominent figures as Benito Juárez, José Vasconcelos and Porfirio Díaz will take on meaning. The visit programme includes not only Monte Albán, but also the high-profile Centro de
las Artes de San Agustin Etla (CASA), the down-to-earth contemporary artist studios of Sergio Hernández, among others, and architectural projects by Taller de Arquitectura (Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carillo), Rootstudio and Productora (with Belgian architect Wonne Ickx, among others).
