The landscape of the coast of the state of Oaxaca stands out against a violent ocean without pause. The noisy waves do not stop in their attempt to transform, ravage, tear apart the sand. The violence does not stop here; you only have to turn around to see a similar wild landscape, the hostile mountain range, with a merciless sun and ambiguous vegetation wavering between its desert vocation and its green exuberance.

The tension embodied by this landscape was what confronted Japanese architect Tadao Ando in his design for Casa Wabi, a foundation founded in 2014 by Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, for artist residences and collaboration with local communities. The landscape design by Mexican architect Alberto Kalach follows an emergent approach, drawing on the indigenous vegetation already present on the site. There are also projects by the likes of Alvaro Siza, Ambrosi Etchegaray, Kengo Kuma and OMA (under construction). The art is by Héctor Zamora and Lucía Koch and Bosco Sodi, among others.
