Villa E-1207, the icon of Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray, is just one of the many reasons to discover the architecture on the French Riviera.
The coastal area between the French-Italian border and Saint-Tropez had great attraction to the wealthy, artists and creatives before and after World War II.
Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall all painted there because of the beautiful light.
Man Ray filmed his surrealist Les Mystères du Château du Dé at Villa Noailles by French modernist Robert Mallet-Stevens.
In Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Le Corbusier built his Spartan cabanon next to Eileen Gray’s love nest.
The area feels like a place of intersection between architecture, art, their owners and creators.
Like the iconic Cité Radieuse where Le Corbusier worked closely with architect-painter Nadir Afonso.
Or villa Maeght, where the architecture of Josep Lluís Sert embraces the work of Joan Miró, Georges Braque and Alberto Giacometti.
And Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence where the architecture, stained glass, ceramics, sculpture and furniture were designed in detail as a gesamtkunstwerk by Henri Matisse and Auguste Perret.
