Lyon’s identity is based on a direct relationship between architecture and nature.
On the one hand, there is the confluence of the Rhône and Saône, which prompted the Romans to build as early as the first century B.C. On the other hand, the cityscape is defined by two hills: Fourvière and La Croix-Rousse, which are separated by the Saône.
