directed space
Lyon Firminy Éveux
Inscriptions are possible until 15 February 2025.
The largest enclave of Le Corbusier buildings in modest Firminy overwhelms us with poetry.
During an overnight stay in couvent de La Tourette, we embrace Le Corbusier’s Spartan dirigisme.
We discover Georges Adilon’s rare plasticity, on different scales: maison J and école Sainte-Marie Lyon Saint-Paul. Nothing remains undesigned.
Still fulfilling their original functions, the established values of le quartier des États-Unis (Tony Garnier), le quartier des Gratte-Ciel (Robert Giroud, pupil of Tony Garnier) and la cité des Étoiles (Jean Renaudie, pupil Auguste Perret) will convince us of their quality.
In Lyon, the Rhône and Saône rivers lead us unhurriedly to the Musée des Confluences, which announces livable urban space with acupunctures by Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, Christian Kerez, Manuelle Gautrand, Diener & Diener …
Lyon’s identity is based on a direct relationship between architecture and nature.
On the one hand, there is the confluence of the Rhône and Saône, which prompted the Romans to build as early as the first century B.C. On the other hand, the cityscape is defined by two hills: Fourvière and La Croix-Rousse, which are separated by the Saône.
The established values of 20th century extensions such as quartier des États-Unis (Tony Garnier), quartier des Gratte-Ciel (Robert Giroud, student of Tony Garnier) and la cité des
Étoiles (Jean Renaudie, pupil of Auguste Perret) convince with their quality and still fulfil their original functions.
The lively, compact city centre on the peninsula between the Rhone and the Sâone extends southwards into the area that ends in the “Confluence”, where the Musée des Confluences stands alongside contemporary architecture by Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, Christian Kerez, Manuelle Gautrand, Diener & Diener Architekten and …
Lyon’s green areas embrace Georges Adilon’s rare plasticity on several scales. Fireplaces, (book) cabinets and benches are integrated into the structure of his homes.
“L’extérieur est le résultat de ce qui a été conçu à l’intérieur”.
As an old mining and industrial town, Firminy overwhelms with its largest enclave of Le Corbusier buildings. A new city’ for a healthy, functional and socialised life shows a cluster of community buildings – a cultural centre, sports stadium, church and unité d’habitation.
And to complete the Le Corbusier list in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, we will dine and sleep in an oasis of peace. In the midst of wild nature, Couvent de La Tourette is placed on pilotis in the infinite grassy landscape.
